THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER (US)

Hail The Black Dahlia Murder!

In Germany the name The Black Dahlia Murder is very unknown, till now. So tell us please a little bit about you and the members. How old are you sickos and what are your 9 to 5 jobs in boring daily life? Don`t forget to tell about the weather! Is it sunny or rainy in Detroit?

Well, my name is Cory. I'm nineteen and I play drums in the band. Then there's Brian and John. They're both 20 and play both guitars in the band. Dave is 20 and plays bass. Trevor is the oldest at 22 and he's behind the vocals and lyrics. We all have various shit jobs that are constantly changing. Delivering pizza has been the most common between us. As for the weather in Detroit.. it's actually pretty nice during spring and summer. It doesn't get too hot or humid, but Winter here can be nuts

Ok, comin' to the musick! When did you choose to play Death Metal and no rap fuck or stuff like that. I mean, with metalmusic you can't pay some bills, huh? Expect you play in Cannibal Corpse!

We chose to play death metal because that is the type of music we listen to frequently and love. We know we aren't the most original band on the face of the planet, but we're just here to
to have fun and play metal the way we want it to sound. We take all of our favorite elements from death/thrash/black metal and create the sound that is The Black Dahlia Murder.

That's the next question: Why do you play Swedish stiled Metal and not that typical U.S. Metal with one blast after another blast and frog vocals? Or being technical wankers like the other bands wich didn't have any feeling in the musick? Stuff like blast-break-blast-break, haha. Really boring huh?

I'd have to say that I disagree with you on that. My favorite type of music actually happens to be U.S. death metal with the "blasts and frog vocals". Haha. But, the reason that we decided to place hints of melody in our sound is because we also are into lots of melodic death/thrash bands. We like all different genres of metal, and just take influences from all ends of the spectrum.

The next what confused my mind is your really untypical bandname! Who came on that fuckin' idea to call you The Black Dahlia Murder and what stands behind the name?

The Black Dahlia Murder is actually just this mystery about this women named Beth Short (nicknamed the Black Dahlia) that got brutally murdered and gutted. They never solved the case, and something like 80+ people confessed to the murder. We aren't really into the actual black dahlia murder case, we just chose it as a band name. The case doesn't really mean anything to us.

What did you before playing in TBDM? Any other bands before? Did you record some stuff before "Unhallowed" came out? Or do you have some side Projects where you're involved in?

We've all been in other projects before this one. I personally have been in more bands than I can remember, as well as Dave and Trevor. I know Brian has been in a few too. John was in one or two bands. Me, Dave, and Trevor have recorded with previous bands many many times. I've actually been in a few bands with Dave over the years.

In my opinion John is a hell of a leadguitarist! It's really interesting to follow his sick leadguitar and his solis! Are you proud that he's in your band?

I would definitely agree with you. The kid is insane. He practices every single day for hours. Sometimes you can just sit there and actually watch him get better and better. I'm definitely proud of John being in our band and I wouldn't
want anyone else. Aside from being the man at guitar, he's also probably the funniest person you've ever met.

Ok, Trevor, think you are Trevor, huh? When not, please change the name. Tell me a little bit about your lyrical concept? Tell me a little bit about the lyrics in every song!

Well, Trevor isn't the one writing this so you'll just have to deal. Trevor basically writes and elaborates on classic horror themes such as zombies and wehrewolves, but in my opinion brings it to a whole new descriptive level. He's a fucking sick vocalist man.

The sound on "Unhallowed" is brutal as fuck and crystal clear! Who did that great job?

"Unhallowed" was recorded with our friend Mike Hasty at Cloud City Studios which is a small independent studio in our area. Definitely check out his site at http://www.cloudcitystudios.com/

What are the reactions about "Unhallowed" till now? A few minutes ago, I've read the review in Germanys biggest Mag. Rock Hard. They gave 8/10 Points. Satisfied? Tell me about the reactions?

We've been very pleased with the reviews we've been getting. We haven't gotten any bad reviews at all. The worst reviews we've gotten are ones that just think the cd is OK, which still isn't bad in my opinion. No one has been like "UGH!!! This is the worst band EVER!" So, I'd say the response has been great.

You are very inspired by Swedish Metal acts. Are you a big fan from that stile of Death Metal? What are you hearing at that point of time? Who are your influences?

We are inspired by many types of bands. From Morbid Angel to Carnal Forge. Lately I've been listening to lots of brutal death metal. The new Decrepit Birth full length and Deeds of Flesh have been playing frequently. Oh yeah, and fucking PSYCROPTIC! Unique Leader has been putting out the sickest shit lately.

You play constantly fast stuff and not boring, lame fuck. Sometimes you blast as fast as you can. So tell me, how important are the blasts for you and your sound?

I think the blasts are important for our sound because there aren't many melodic death metal bands that put the emphasis on DEATH. I think we manage to keep it pretty fucking brutal for belonging to such a sometimes boring and tame genre.

Tell me a little bit about the scene in Detroit! I must confess, I can`t remember any good band that came from Detroit? Or I`ve forgotten! When in Detroit are more good bands that we know, then tell us names! Who is worth our mention?

Detroit is a wasteland. The only acts you've probably heard of from here are Eminem and Kid Rock. The hardcore scene is a joke and the metal scene doesn't exist. There are some very awesome bands in this area though. Make sure you check out SAPROGENIC. They're so fucking sick. Their full length is coming out soon on Deepsend Records, so make sure you check it out (www.saprogenic.com)

What about playing live! Can you play live as often as you want? With whom did you play in the past? Reactions from bangers? What can we expect when you will anytime destroy Germany?

We just recently got home from a shitload of touring. The first tour was with our good friends IN SET ABLAZE. We had a blast and can't wait to hit the road with them again sometime in the
in the future. The one that just ended was with The Red Chord, Deadwater Drowning, and Premonitions of War. All insanely good bands. Make sure you check them all out. Hopefully we'll be over in Europe sometime early next year.

Is the older stuff from TBDM available or is it sold out? Did you play another stile before "Unhallowed"?

When we first started as a band, it was a very metalcore driven sound. Pretty breakdown heavy, but with lots of warning of what was to come. We ditched the metalcore sound because we just weren't happy with it. It seemed so limiting and cliché. There is no older merchandise left by the way. We finally sold out of our first EP.. although there are talks of maybe repressing it...

How did it come that you sign by Metal Blade? I know, they gave you a pen and you have to sign, mafia like, hahaha.

Actually it was very unexpected. One night when I got home and checked my email, I had a message from Brian Slagel saying that he had gotten a package we sent them and he loved it, and that he wanted to offer us a deal. It was as simple as that.

Are you satisfied with their work for TBDM? What do you think, can Metal Blade push you to another top in the scene? What do you expect from them?

We are very very satisfied and thankful with what Metal Blade has been doing for us. They have been such a huge help and friendly all along. We have our faith in them doing whatever they can to help us.

Is any tour planed in the near future?

We just got done with a few tours, and I'm pretty sure there are more to come. A lot of it is still up in the air though.

You sons of darkness have all short hair! Very untypical, huh? Like me! A Death Metal band must have long hair that you can`t see the faces when bangin!!! Or?

Fuck that. It's about what a band sounds like, not what they look like.

The Intro and the Outro from "Unhallowed" are spoken words. What is it for a story?

It's actually just Trevor reading from these instructions for preparing a human for consumption. The butchering process and whatnot.

Ok, Cory, David, John, Trevor and Brian. That's all! Hope you've enjoyed it a little bit and the questions weren't boring. I have to listen "Unhallowed" now! You can finish the inti with your last words or a joke or whatever you want! But please don't say dirty words, I'm 13 years old and my parents say every day don't read pervert stuff. Cheers fuckers and hope to see you soon on stage! DESTROY THE LIGHT AND BLAST ON!!!

Thank you very much for the interest! Eat pussy and freak the fuck out.
