Hi Deathsquad - Valle, what`s up Sweden and in Impious camp? Any news? Good or bad!

Hi Marcus! Everything is cool at the moment. We just came home from the tour almost a week ago, and now we're slowly getting back to normal life... haha! At the moment we have a little break from shows and rehearsals, so that I can concentrate on writing new material for the next album.

So tell us: When and why did YOU start playing Metal? Any bands before Impious? How old are you and the rest in Impious? What are your jobs in real life?

Why I started?! I think it all started when METALLICAs "black album" was released. At that time I was 12 years old and was taking guitar lessons. I found the lessons quite boring and I almost stopped playing because of that! But then my favorite band, Metallica, released the black album and suddenly I could play stuff from my heros (those songs are quire simple) instead of all boring shit that my teacher wanted me to play. That was how it started I guess when it comes to playing metal. I had a little project before Impious for a very short while. It was back in 92-93 and we called ourselves Sudden Death. No big thing, we never recorded anything.
I'm 24, Robin and Erik are 23, Martin is 27, and our little junior (Mikael - our drummer) is only 19 years old. As you can see, we're a quite young band! Just wait a few years and we'll kick your ass big time!! Hahaha!!
Erik and Mikael are studying, Robin is an electrician, and Martin builds cars for SAAB. I work at Volvo. But no, I am not building cars! I work for Volvo Aero Corporation, where I work with airplane engines. I kind of take care of quality stuff... much paperwork.

I think here in Germany we don`t know enough about you and Impious! So tell us a little bit from your past: Demos, members, girls, jokes, etc. Hope you`ll get bloody fingers, hahaha.

Fuck, you want my credit card number too??? Haha!! Well, I agree that not too many people know about us in Germany. I hope we are on our way to change that!
Impious was formed by Martin and me during spring of ´94. In ´95 we released our first demo called Infernal Predomination, in ´96 we released our second called The Suffering, and in ´97 we recorded our last demo simply called Promo ´97. This demo gave us a deal with Swedish label Black Sun Records. In ´98 we released our debut album called Evilized. It got quite good reviews, but nothing really happaned. Then it took 2 years until we released our second album Terror Succeeds. And once again, cool reviews but nothing happened. No tour or anything. That kind of pissed us off, so we went hunting for a new label. We recorded 4 new songs and sent them out to some labels. Finally we decided for Hammerheart. And in 2002 we released out third album called The Killer. This year we also released a mini CD especially for our tour with Necrophobic and Satariel. It's only printed in 1000 copies.

Impious is not that typical name for a band in my opinion. Why you choose this name?

I think it's a perfect name for our music and our personal beliefs. It means Godless.

I must confess, before I saw you two weeks ago, I know that there's a band called Impious but I gave a fuck about that. But your fresh and brutal Thrash Metal, what I've heard convinced me that Impious is good for me, hahaha. Your comment about winning new fans with cool live gigs, please !

I think touring is the ultimate way to reach out to new fans! Samplers are also effective, but not as good as touring. Okay, if you're a shitty live-band then you're fucked. But I hope and think that we deliver a quite good show when we play.

So let's talking a little bit about your three Longplayer and the new Mcd ( witch is a fuckin `blast in my ears!!!!!). Tell us a little bit about every record! Differences, where did you record, Label etc. Start the battle with your first release from 1998 "Evilized"!

Evilized is a cool album, but I don't really like it. The sound is not very good and I think back then we didn't know how to arrange good songs. I mean, there are some real killer riffs on that album, but I think the arrangements are crappy. Maybe we were a bit too young, too fresh... We recorded it in the classic Sunlight Studios with Tomas Skogsberg, and I can assure you that we'll never record there again. As I said before, this album was released by Swedish label Black Sun Records.

In 2001 came "Terror Succeeds"!

Actually I think that this album was released in 2000, but on some places it was released in 2001. This album is better than Evilized. It has better production, better arrangements and so on. But I am anyway not so satisfied with it. It's a cool album, but I wish we would have done some things different.
The album was recorded in Studio Mega with producer Chris Silver, and released once again by Black Sun.

One year later came "The Killer" about Hammerheart Records!

Yes! Now we're talking baby!! In some ways is see this album as our debut album! This is the first time I can feel that it feels right. I know this is not nice to say about our two first albums, but that's just how I personally feel. This album is better in every way. It has killer riffs, better arrangements, better sound, better performance... everything is just better in my opinion! Like our second album, it was recorded at Studio Mega. And yes, released by Hammerheart Records.

Your last release is the MCD "The Deathsquad", a compilation with covertunes, and other stuff but we `ll talk later intensive about that little asskicker. When you will you can say one or two words now about it, hahaha!

This Mcd includes one track (The Deathsquad) from our latest album The Killer. Then there's a re-recorded song which is called Extreme Pestilence. This song can originally be found on our first album Evilized. Then we have three covers: "Trapped Under Ice" - METALLICA, "Soldiers Of Hell" - RUNNING WILD and "Live Wire" - MÖTLEY CRÜE. Finally there is a demo version of the song The Deathsquad, and also the song Dead Eyes Open.

Did Black Sun Rec. fucked you up and ripped you off? Do you have seen any royalities from them? Why the change from Black Sun next to Hammerheart? How many records you`ve sold, all in all?

I have no idea how many copies we sold on Black Sun. We've never seen any money from that period! So yes, I guess you could say we got fucked... bigtime!! We never got to go on any tours or something, no support at all! That's why we changed to Hammerheart.

Do you think that Hammerheart can push you to a higher level? Are you satisfied with their work for Impious?

If your compare our level from the time on Black Sun to the level on Hammerheart, then yes, they have pushed us up quite a bit! I think they do a quite good work, and they are much more proffesional. I'm happy.

Hey, your name Avzic is not that typical name for a
a Swedish Guy. In my opinion a typical Swedish name is Peterson, Larsson, Forsberg, Axelson, Persson, Kärki, Estby (hahaha) or Lundgren. So tell me where does the name come from! The man from my sister is called Hamzic and he comes from Kroatia !

DISMEMBER eh?!! Haha!! Kärki is by the way a Finnish name! But yes, you are right. My name is not Swedish at all. Both my parents are born in Yugoslavia, but I was born here in Sweden.

About your influences! Who are your influences ? What are you hearing? Who are your faves, etc.

Shit, I listen to a lot of different stuff! In my opinion there is only good and bad music. I listen to what I think is good, no matter what style it is. I am very open when it comes to music.
But my favorite band of all times is Metallica!! Okay, lately they have done some lousy songs, but I like most of the stuff they have done very much! Other bands I like are Testament, Slayer, Type O Negative, The Gathering, Deicide, Suffocation, Cannibal Corpse, Sisters Of Mercy, Anthrax, Black Sabbath, Kreator, and many, many others...

Ah, another stupid shit! My gay buddy Uwe is for seven weeks in Thailand. He calls it vacation, hahaha. Any commends about that? ( Uwe is a friend of mine, we pop us up as often as we can and we take every chance to do this. He also writes for the mag. Send him some “greetings”, please, hahaha

Three things Uwe:
#One - Keep your filthy fingers off those little innocent boys!!! Haha!!
# Two - Keep your filthy fingers off me if we meet sometime!!!! Hahaha!!!
# Three - Have fun in Thailand.

As far as I know the "big" press ignores Impious, right?

Yes, somehow I agree. But I think we have to work to gain some respect in the bigger magazines. We will just keep on to make better and better albums, and one day they just can't ignore us!!

As I saw you with Necrophobic in Essen I said to another gay buddy from another mag that you `d really worked hard for your money this evening. Was the tour a good result for Impious?

Yes, I think it was a success for us! We gained many new fans and made many new useful contacts.

Any cool storys from the tour?

Man, there are probably a thousand cool stories to tell! But it's not even a week since we came home, so I haven't landed on the ground yet... haha!! But I can really say that everybody was so fucking cool on the tour, we were like a big fucking happy faimly!! My warmest greetings goes out to the guys in Necrophobic and Satariel, I love the guys!

The gig in Essen wasn`t well attended. I counted ca. 60 Metalheads but two months before when Nile played there were only 80 guests.A shame for both concerts, right ? Tell me about the rest from the tour! Do you think that Impious have won new fans?

In Essen I heared from somebody that there were almost 80 people, but maybe I'm wrong. Maybe it was with the guestlist included. But no matter, I agree with you that it's too little. But I think it depends on that you have too many concerts over there. People get tired of it and so only 80 true metalheads show up. Respect to those 80!! Yes, as I said before this tour was very successful for Impious I think. People really seemed to enjoy the show and a lot of new fans came to us afterwards with their compliments.

When you start the opening riff from fuckin' "Live Wire" you`ve won my heart. I have identified the track from the first riff. What a killertune !!! Why you choose this one playing live and not "Trapped under Ice" or "Soldiers from Hell"? I saw the fun in your faces when playing this especially in Erik's face stands the pure fun!

Hey cool!! Before the tour we were quite unsure if "Live Wire" would work in Germany. We thought maybe people would laugh, or think that we are silly because we play a non-death metal song. But people really seemed to like it. We choose "Live Wire" because not many death/thrash bands would/have done the same thing. It's a little bit different. Also because it's so fun to play it live and because it's a fucking great song!!

Ok, my friend commin' to your last release "The Deathsquad". As I said before this was my first contact with Impious. In my review for our next issue I wrote that you sounds like early Metallica but more raw and faster. The sound it should be!!! Ha!!! Would you agree with me? And why don`t you cover "Certain Death" ? Hahahaha

Hey thanx a lot man!! As you can understand by now, I'm quite a big METALLICA fan!! So I'm sure I'll be very happy with that review!! Haha! I can't agree that we sound like old Metallica, but I can definitely agree on that I am unfluenced by Metallica!
"
Certain Death"? You mean the Sadus song?! I don't know, I guess nobody in the band is really into Sadus that much. By the way, a couple of years ago we recorded METALLICAs song One for a tribute album. I can tell you, it's a fucking sick version!!

I think the track "The Deathsquad" is an absolute thrash killer. Stands this track for the whole music what Impious does?

Thanx again!! This songs shows pretty much what Impious is all about. At least how Impious sounds today, and how Impious will sound in the future. The next album will be a bit more intense and brutal than The Killer.

And from where does the track "Dead Eyes Open" comes from? No words about that in the booklet!

"
Dead Eyes Open" is a song that can be found on our latest album "The Killer". But the version on the Mcd is a demo version.

You write the whole music and the lyrics for Impious. That sounds that you are a little bit like Dave Mustaine from Megadeth, hahaha. Are you the monarch in the band?

Nah... I wouldn't call myself Dave Mustane. Sure, I do almost all the music and lyrics in Impious, but that's because the others want me to do it. They have confidence in me, and they think that my visions and ideas are what will work best. But of course everybody in the band comes with ideas how to change and modify my songs. Sometimes we change a lot, sometimes nothing at all.

What`s your goal with Impious? And what can we expect from Impious in the future?

Our goal is that people get to know who we are. Even if they don't buy our albums, they should know who we are and how we sound. Of course it would be great if Impious would grow and we could live from royalties and touring, but I think that will never happen.

Mikke bangs his head only to the blasts, hahaha. By the way, his double bass is fast as a shark! He`s an insane drummer! Are you proud to play with such a great drummer? He is really insane!!!!!

Yeah, Mikael is a great drummer and he's also so young. Just wait until he gets out of the puberty, then he will really kick ass!! Hahaha!!!

Why should anybody buy "The Killer"?

Because it's a well produced high quality death/thrash album. That’s it.

Puh Valle, I think we close this chapter. I hope you had some fun with the questions and I hope that we could support Impious a little bit. The last words are yours. Hope to see you sometimes back in Germany. Take care! Thrash on!!!!!!

Million thanks to you Marcus for a great interview and for the support!! Hope to see you on the next tour for a beer!! Cheerzzzz!!!
