Congratulation to your new album "Demonic Portraiture"! That's what I call a death metal hurricane. No compromises and full speed ahead. Respect!!! You are satisfied with the album?
Thanks. Yeah, we think the overall production came out very well. We just wish that the guitars had come up louder. They seem very distant. But, yes I think it's crushing.
Tracks like "Strength and Honour", "Woven with Pestilence and War" or "Whirling Spectral Voices" are killers in the right vein. Where do you get the inspiration and the aggression to do such brutal stuff?
It's all about the old school man. Back in the thrash days, we all grew up on it and it's in our blood so it does come out in some of our songs. The fires of metal burn hot within us. Daily life and dealing with stupid, ignorant people gives me plenty of inspiration.
What is your favorite track on "Demonic Portraiture" in my opinion this is the unbelievable fucker "Strength and honour". This intro and this song is more fuckin` metal as other bands it do in their whole career.
Thanks a lot, that's quite a compliment. "Strength & Honour" is actually the instrumental ending to "The First and Last in Battle". I love that song as well. Sometimes it is hard for me to pick a favorite. I really like "What Once Was, Again Shall Be", it starts out very eerily as the story begins then the music becomes very triumphant as the ancient one's are called to rule once more.
There's a hidden track on D.P. what's the title? I can't find any title for that track.
The title for that song is "Crystallized". Our previous guitarist Preston wrote the music and I wrote the lyrics. We chose not to list it because he left the band just days before the recording of Demonic was to begin and we had to scrap some songs because of this. So we put this one on as sort of a tribute.
The sound is really great! The guitar cuts my flesh, but pain will remain, haha. Only the snare sound is a little bit wooden! Hope you know what I mean, haha. Will you enter this studio for your next "legacy" again?
Yes we will. Hopefully before this year is up. We really enjoy working with Chris at Studio One. He is a good friend of ours and we have been working with him since the beginning.

In Wermelskirchen you told me, that when you are back in the states, you will finish your next record as soon as you can. Three or four songs are ready. In which direction goes the stuff? More in the "Strength and Honour" or "Field of scream" vein, also typical ultra fast Disinter uffta-uffta- sound or more in the doomy way like "What once was..."- style? When comes your new album? Any songtitels?
After we play Milwaukee Metal fest this year we are going to concentrate solely on the new record. I'm sure |
we will play some shows but not many. The new material is similar to Demonic and Welcome. There will be a lot of variety as always. A couple of the new song titles are "Longing for Death" and "Black Seas of Infinity".
In Carnage issue 8 you told Leif that your second album would be titled "Beyond the grace of god". What's the reason that the album now is called "Demonic Portraiture"?
It is actually our third album. You forget about "Desecrated" which was released in 97. The reason we decided to change the album title at the last minute is because we were at a Marduk show in Chicago and they announced one of their songs as Beyond the Grace of God. It was kind of funny because we all looked at each other and said "Shit!" So we decided to change it. I think Demonic Portraiture better fits the album anyway.
Where do you see the differences from "Welcome to Oblivion" next to "Demonic Portraiture"?
The recording and production is the first thing I hear. Demonic no longer has the presence of our previous guitarist and I think you can really tell that part of the band is gone. He wrote very unique songs. We are a little better at what we do now and learn more every day.
I think that you are one of the best death metal shouter that the scene spits out for a long time. Your stile is very unique and your live performance blowed me away. With your spike and leather styled outfit you looked like an evil metal wizard, that shows no mercy with the crowd. It looks that you will exorcise the audience. Where do you get influences do such an outstanding, intense and aggressive performance? By the way, all DISINTER members are live animals!
Thank you very much. Me being a vocalist is very strange because I'm a little anti-social and shy. I used to have a huge problem with standing in front of a crowd; it just freaked me out. Now I just turn into a different person on stage, it is the only place where I can release my rage and I just do what I do.
Tell us some impressions from your euro-tour! Whats up with the other bands? Friendship? Reactions from the fans. Especially in the east block the girls are willing to do it, right? Haha Have you met interesting people? Have you met your German record company Morbid Rec.? And? Good members?
|
It was a good tour, although it wasn't promoted as much as it could have been. The best part was how well we got along with Grave and The Forsaken. They are cool gays, haha!! We had a very good time on the road. It was just good for us to get out there and promote our new record; there are a lot of people who are not familiar with Disinter. The women seem to stay away from us for some reason; I think we smell too bad for them, haha. We met the guys from Morbid Records last year on our tour
|
but this time we got to talk and hang out more because they were at Fuck The Commerce and came to two of the shows. Olaf and Carsten are cool guys and I feel they are doing their best for us.
Are you satisfied with the work from Morbid Rec.? How many Records you have sold at that point of time from "Demonic Portraiture"? What were the reactions by press and fans?
Morbid works very hard for us and we are happy so far. Demonic was released on November 27th and we have sold around 2000 copies since then. A lot of people seem to really enjoy the album and it has received great reviews.
Why the hell you didn't play one of your best fucker "Field of scream"? Would you like to have stress with me or what? Haha, Mike promised me to play "Field of Scream" on your next tour. Remember him to do that, haha.
Haha, yes I know how you feel. I love that song. We have only done it live a few times because it is so long. So rather than play one long song we two shorter ones.
On the tour you selled a limited CD called "VEDMA- The Disinter witch project". What was the idea behind this release? Was it your own label where you released this stuff? And tell us what is on this great CD! Oh Zion, I hope you understand my bad English!!!
This was our idea. Vedma was completely self-released and the idea was to just put all of our songs about witchcraft and similar topics on one cd along with four cover songs. The cover songs are Slayer: Show No Mercy, Terrorizer: Dead Shall Rise, At The Gates: Blinded By Fear and Hypocrisy: Osculum Obscenum. We also redid some of the older songs like Storm of the Witch. Your English is fine by the way.
Live you played a great cover track from this CD "Osculum Obscenum" from Swedish Gods Hypocrisy (at that point of time. Now they whimped out!). I thought it was one of your own tracks. I for myself didn't realize that this was a cover tune. Later Bjorn- Torsten from Legacy Mag. told me that's a cover tune. And I was very surprised next day when I hear that song on "VEDMA". This song goes round for some days in my stereo.
Cool. We usually do one of the covers live. It's just something fun for us to do.
What are you hearing at that point of time? Do you know some German bands?
I really like IMPENDING DOOM, FALKENBACH, KREATOR, SAMAEL (uh, they are from Switzerland... - Leif) some old SODOM and DESTRUCTION. I was just listening to the new BOLT THROWER (cool, don't know this German band, haha - Leif) album and it sounds killer.
Tell me how important are your lyrics? I feel and hear "Field of Scream" and "Strength and Honour" are in the same vein. Metal, fans, bands, warriors and battles that must fight against the mainstream, right? Is "Strength and Honour" the continuation from "Field of Scream"? I mean, both tracks sounds a little bit similar. You are fascinating about the middle age in Europe, right?
Field of Screams and First and Last in Battle are very similar songs but First and last is not a continuation. I feel lyrics are very important at getting the over all feel of the music into tangible forms. Those songs are basically about fighting for what you believe in and taking no prisoners. Never let lies rule your life! Medieval Europe holds a fascination for me and I am currently reading a book called The Inquisition: Hammer of Heresy. I am just amazed at what went on at that point in time and how powerful and disgusting the church was. I cant believe people still embrace a church that tortured and burned innocents because it felt threatened by anyone who had doubts in a god. Destroy the light!!!
Tell us a little bit about the metal scene in Chicago! Did SCEPTER split up? Do you have some clubs where you can do and see live gigs?
The scene here is killer. There are a lot of cool bands as well. All scenes have their ups and downs and I think Chicago is doing very well at the moment. I haven't heard anything about SCEPTER in a long time; I think they all went to hell. Great places to see big bands are The House Of Blues, The Metro, The Aragon Ballroom and the Riviera; House of Blues is the most common venue though. Some smaller venues are Rubes and The Rock House, which is where most of the underground shows are.
What was the last band you saw live and what was the last record you've bought?
The last show that I went to where we were not playing was Dimmu Borgir, Krisiun and Cryptopsy at the House of Blues. Krisiun just rules live. The last CDs I bought were Unleashed: Hells Unleashed, Theatre of Tragedy: Assembly, Rammstein (the 95` release, I cant remember the name) and the Brian Setser Orchestra: Dirty Boogie. Quite a variety don't you think?
Any chance that you release some DISINTER vinyl?
Oh yes. Merciless/Breath of Night Records will release our first album "Desecrated" on limited vinyl and CD very soon. We are hoping it will see the darkness by July. Did I mention it has bonus tracks?
I've heard that DISINTER have won the Horror Award for your homepage! Tell us, how it comes?
I think they just checked out our site and gave us an award. Horrorfind.com has a great Website.
What will the future bring for DISINTER maniacs worldwide?
More dark blazing metal and another album next spring/summer. Hopefully we will do a video as well.
I'm very interested to get your "Desecrated" re-release and the "With the Blood" '96 Demo. Can you send me a copy? Or what's the price for this two releases?
Merciless Records will handle the "Desecrated" Re-release. The With the Blood demo has basically the same tracks on it minus a few.
Puh, o.k. Zion, That's all my friend. Thanks for spending time. Hope you enjoyed my questions and understand all the bullshit I've wrote, haha. Greetings to you and all the other DISINTER fuckers and I wish you all the best for the future. Hope to hear from you very soon! Give us German maniacs a new record as soon as you can, haha. See you next tour! Bye and take care, last words are your`s! Cheers and Raise the Dead!!!
Thanks for the great interview Marcus I have enjoyed it thoroughly. To all of our fans in Germany, thanks for coming out to the shows and for your endless support. We will be back!!! Hail Metal!!! Hail Darkness!!! Cheers!!!
