NEPHASTH is a very cool band from Brazil which signed to Mighty Music and released their debut "Immortal Unholy Triumph" there. Some of you perhaps know them from the "Brazilian Assault" Sampler from Relapse. So, here is an interview, which was answered by Rafael Barros (guitar)

Hi Rafael, you crazy Brazilian Death Metal Fucker! Welcome in the 10th. Issue from Germany's Death Thrash Grind "Carnage zine"!
I think German lunatics don`t know much about NEPHASTH, so stop the blow- job with your drummer and answer some questions! Who the fuck is NEPHASTH? When did you began to play and....why are you playing brutal ass kicking Death Metal? (Boring question, I know, right, haha)

The band was formed in April of 1997 by Fábio Lentino (bass/vocals), Marcos Moura (guitar), Maurício Weimar (drums) and me, Rafael Barros (guitar) with the intiating to do a fast, brutal and agrssive music.
We play Death Metal 'cause it reflect the style of life of each member of the band. Death Metal is the most pure form of Metal, it's true, honest, direct and killer.

The fist time I`ve heard about NEPHASTH was on the "Brazilian Assault" with ABHORRENCE, MENTAL HORROR and OPHIOLATRY. I think on that point of time NEPHASTH had the strongest and best material on it. Who came up with the idea to do a four way split CD? Was that your first musical output?

First of all, thank you for the support. This work was projected by Relapse, through the powerfull mind of Tom Hailey. He did contact the bands inviting them to make part of that project, but NEPHASTH in a special way, was indicated by the ABHORRENCE guys, who kept contact a long time before with Tom. The material which is on the „Brazilian Assault“ is the second demo "The Merciless Face Of  Evil" (2000). Our first recording was released in 1997 when the band still was named INTERIOR SOUL.

I think you are not in that boring ultra fast vein like other brazilian bands (Krisiun, Mental Horror or RebelliUn to name a few), I think and hear that you are more influenced by some fuckin`U.S. Monsters like Malevolent Creation, Deicide or Monstrosity with a little bit more Thrash Metal influences, right? Are you into U.S. Death Metal and Thrash Metal? Tell us
about your influences!

You're right! We have several American Death Metal influences like Decide and Malevolent Creation. But we can't forget the masters of Morbid Angel, Krisiun, Vader and Slayer (Gods). Definitly, Slayer is the main influence of the band, it shows the Thrash Metal vein. We try to bring to our music the 80's feeling of this great band. Inclusively, we'll make part of a Slayer's tribute with the song "War Ensemble", coming soon.

Tracks like "Gloomy Words" or "False Pride" are more in that thrash vein with some great Bay Area Riffs. Is that direction you will go?

We're getting originality to our music, that's the direction! But sure we're making something based in the Thrash Metal, with very much feeling in the riffs, mixing with speed and brutality of nowadays. Thrash Metal is our root.

On "Immortal Unholy Triumph" are two different sounds. I think you have only add the songs from the demo to the new ones, right? If yes, is it so fucking  expensive to do a CD in Brazil?

The 10 tracks was recorded exclusively for the "Immortal Unholy Triumph". We re-recorded the tracks from the Demo.

Tell us a little bit about the underground scene in Brazil? Do you know the fuckers from HEADHUNTER D.C.?

Brazil has the biggest Death Metal scene of the world, in relation to the number of bands. The style is idolatred by the bangers. But in Barzil does not exist an
professional estruture to live concerts, everything is so
fucking precarious. There are no festivals here as there. The fews labels that exists don't make a good divulgation and promotion works to its bands, and don't put the bands in tours for the country. The bigges problem is our
poor economy situation, but step by step, the scene will grow up, although this fact. Already was happened a change, there's tour managers, labels, zines and mainly bands like KRISIUN, NEPHASTH,  REBAELLIUN, MENTAL HORROR and ABHORRENCE, elevating the level of our Death Metal out of the country. Due it, the maniacs have supported more the brazilian bands. We know the work of HeadHunter D.C., but we haven't contact with them.

Your lyrics are really antichristian. Tell us please a little bit about your lyrics!

We just explain in our lyrics, as in our ideology, the total unsatisfaction against the actual christain society, through a critical and anti-humanist vision. We're developing themes about it, what allow us to retract and to valorize the human being like an individual and unique creature.

Fun question: Are you into satan, haha ?

We don't follow not even preach any religion. As answered, we show our insatisfaction to the christian society and its dirty congregation. hahaha!

How are the reactions for "Immortal Unholy Triumph" by press and fans worldwide?

The reaction are the better possible for us. A short time ago, we were a newly formed and unknown band. Now we were relatively knew in the world underground and we have some fans, due that album, and for the apperance in the Brazilian Assault compilation. The press have supported our work in a positive way.

What was it for a feeling if Mighty Music wants to sign your band Nephasth? Who starts the contact?

The deal was made between our manager and Mighty Music. We believe Mighty saw a strong potencial, profissionalism and a serious purpose in our work.

Are you satisfied with the work from Mighty Music for Nephasth? Why did they sign Nephasth and not Ophiolatry or Mental Horror (also on the „Brazilian Assault“ Sampler) what do you think?

We're satisfied in part with Mighty Music, 'cause some promises wasn't executed. Brazilian Assault wasn't the reason for the contract, 'cause we already have sign with Mighty Music before that Relapse- compilation.

What`s up with an European tour? Any chances to see Nephasth live in Germany someday?

There's many plans and invitings to play out. As we told before, some promises wasn't executed. We hope to see you as soon as possible.

Tell us a little bit about life for a metalhead like you in Brazil! Do you have the opportunity to play live as often as you want?

No, everything is very difficult here in Brazil, especially for the Death Metal be the most underground style into Metal. Imagine a third world country with a precarious economy and a disbelief. it's not very easy.

What was the last gig you have seen and the last you have done?

The last concert we did, was with KRISIUN, recently. And the last show I saw, was Funeratus, a brazilian Death Metal band from São Paulo.

What are your favourite Metal Classics and what are you hearing at that point of time? What was the last album you have bought?

Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Kreator, Slayer, Motorhead, Iron Maiden. We have hearing the same things, the old Morbid Angel, old Decide, old Slayer, Vader, etc. Nowadays, I didn't buy news CDs, but the last was "Annihilation" from REBAELLIUN.

Are you into the European Death Metal scene? Do you know some German Death Metal bands?

Yes. The same news you get, the bands are rising up, we get these news. We know the work of some german bands, like the label mate of Anasarca, Fleschcrawl, Impure and some other I'm not sure if are from Germany.

The only Nephasth interview I`ve read was in German Eternity Mag. Did no one want to speak with you?

We gave interviews for other zines, this is not the unique. We receive many e-mails from Germany, not especificaly interviews.

Do you have written some new material, new stuff? When comes a new Nephasth longplayer and what will it bring?

Yes, we have a new album almost ready. It will be released in the beginning of 2003. It will show a more mature NEPHASTH, more agressive and tight.

My friend Uwe is a fucking poser,he means Nephasth sounds like Rebelliun! What can I do with such a pussy? (Rebelliun rules!!!!!!! So it`s just OK. And they are NOT boring!!!!!!!!!!!! Uwe)

Each one have his own opinion. We respect  them all.

Hey Fabio, tell us a little bit about the beautyfull Brazilian chicks and for my friends from Necromaniac- Zine a little bit about Brazilian gays, hahaha!

The gilrs here are the most hot and wonderful in the world, and we love to fuck them, hahaha. Fuck Off the gays.

What do you think, who will be soccer world champion?

Brazil, sure.

OK, Fabio, thats all. Hope you enjoyed my questions and having some fun with it, hope also you understand my bad english, haha. Good luck for the future and NEPHASTH Greetings to the other members. Bye and take care! Last words are yours and NEPHASTH! Bring the Hammer down!!!!!!!!!

We thank you very much for the support. We're very gratefull for the interview. Stay brutal rising up the Death Metal flag. Hail Carnage Zine and German maniacs!!!!!!!
