CINERARY (US)

From the Ashes of the Band INCESTUOUS, which released the pretty brutal "Brass knuckle Abortion"-Album, a new Killer-Band rised up: CINERARY combines Members of such neckbreaking Acts as DISGORGE (US), GORGASM, CUMCHRIST, BRODEQUIN and CORPSE VOMIT and the 6-Song-CD "Rituals of Desecration" ist an absolut Lesson in merciless Brutality. Now I have some Questions for Frontman Matti Way and Guitarist Dan "Wrench" Louise. How is the History of that brutal "All Star"-Project, which I personally would declare as the Top Act of the Year?

Dan Louise: Wow man, thanks!!! We had originally gotten Matti way to Chicago from California to pick something up. Incestuous had just fallen apart and Matti had just parted ways with Disgorge, so the writing was on the wall. Derek Hoffman talked to Matti about moving to Chicago. It's about 2000 miles from California, so it was hard to get it all together. Anyway, Matti got to Chicago and we had no idea what we were going to do. Derek and I had a few tunes from Incestuous that never got finished and we started working on that. The first day of practice though, I dropped the tuning on the guitars because Matti's vokills are so fucking guttural! So, we kept working on stuff and messing around with new ideas, and then Derek went back to Gorgasm. So, Matti moved back to California and ran the idea past Ricky Myers, and he was all for it. I sent out a tape to him of what we had done, and in a few months I made it to San Diego to rehearse and record. I think altogether we had like seven practices in ten days and then went and recorded. It was wild that we even got shit tight, but everything came together real fast. Ricky's a good player, man. Anyway, we wrote new stuff and finished songs that weren't finished in like a week or two. When we got to the studio, Jamie Bailey was there and he was digging what was going on, so we asked him if he would be interested in playing in the band. He agreed, so there you have it. That's about as short as I can make it.

When will the next release of CINERARY follow? Do you already have some new songs?

Dan Louise: Yeah, I have some new riffs, but we have to get everyone together to get the songs done. I don't think it's a good idea that I write the stuff and then just send it to everyone and that's it. Everyone in this band has something to bring to the table, and we should exploit that. It may take a little while, but I think it will be worth it in the long run. I think the stuff we have already is more brutal and cohesive than the first one. I'm hoping to get some work done on it in November with everyone, and then we'll go from there.

How was the gig on the Ohio Death Fest? Which bands would you name as the best on the festival?

Dan Louise: Ohio was sick man! Every band I saw just kicked my fucking ass! I'd have to say Disavowed stood out to me, but you know I was getting fucking stoned the whole time. We were only able to get one practice in before Ohio though. It was when the fucking vendors were setting up the tables about 2 hours before the show started! I think we did O.K. for basically no rehersal. I haven't seen the video yet, so that will probably be the true litmus. But yeah man, Ohio fest is always brutal as hell!

Matti, why did you leave DISGORGE? The famous personal or musical differences?

MATTI WAY: The reason I left was because I wasn't able to tour full-time with the band. There's no personal problems between me and anyone in Disgorge.

Matti, on the "Cranial Impalement"-Demo-Collection of DISGORGE you've got a Voice, which I only can discribe as the most gutteral and awesomest Grunt I've ever heard. Hell, that's extreme!! Before I heard your killing Voice the first Time, I always thought, no one can get more extreme than Will Rahmer of MORTICIAN, but you defintively rule. Do you have the Throat of a Lion or did you use Harmonizers?

Matti Way: Thanks for the compliment bro. There's definately no harmonizers on my voice.

Which bands are the major influences for CINERARY?

Dan Louise: There's so many it's really hard to say. Personally, I like more power shit and punk, like Pyrexia and Napalm and the Exploited. Matti's into Immolation, and I couldn't even tell you Ricky and Jamie's influences. There's so many good bands that have been around, to single one out just wouldn't be fair.

Do you prefer recording Tracks in a Studio or play your songs live on Stage? How intense do you enjoy standing on the Stage and watching the Fans moshing and diving and so on?

Dan Louise: I think playing live on a stage is more fun. When you see everyone fucking each other up from the stage, it really gets the adrenaline flowing. But playing in the studio has its advantages too. They are two different entities though, it makes it hard to compare. But I like the energy from playing balls out and inciting violence. There's nothing like it.

In the next few Years the world-wide Death Metal/Grindcore-Scene finally rised up again after that fuckin' Black Metal-and Melodic Death-Boom. True, uncompromising Death Metal in the Vein of the old Godz has lucky Days now, nearly like in the Golden Years of Death in the early Nineties. What do you think about that "New Wave of Death", I would call it? Is it a Blessing in your Opinion or do you think, just the old Trend-Shitters from the first big Death Metal-Boom now rejoined the Scene after the Black Metal now got boring for them?

Dan Louise: I'm glad to hear that worldwide metal is doing good, because here in the States it sucks ass. Bar owners won't even book metal bands really because their place gets trashed or they freak out when they see brutal pits. As far as black metal, I think there's a few good bands and then A LOT of horseshit fag face-painters that just suck. If people are doing black metal and then doing other shit because they're bored, then fuck 'em. They should go play fucking Bon Jovi and jerk off in the mirror because they're fakes. I can't even keep up with all the bands I hear these days, but as long as they are for real about it then I think it's cool, no matter if it's re-hashed death metal or black metal or hardcore or whatever. But I always like hearing something new that just rips your fucking head off!

What do you think about Multimedia Tracks? Can you imagine to put some Live-Shots of CINERARY onto the following Release? That would be a fine Present for the Freaks, I think!

Dan Louise: Interesting.maybe something to look into there.

How do you spend your whole Days when you are not working with the Band? Just living the Sex, Drugs and Rock'n'Roll-Livestyle or what?

Dan Louise: Well, we all work day jobs because we don't make shit at this, but we all still get out and party and have fun. I always try to have something brewing with bands though. Like right now, Cumchrist has gotten back together.we haven't played in a few years and now it's back with the original lineup, so we're writing our asses off. It keeps me busy and somewhat sober. Well, maybe not sober. Disgorge has always worked hard at touring and shit, and  Brodeqin always stays busy too. But as far as not doing band shit, yeah, it's pretty much normal shit. You know, strippers, hydro, and grind!

Do you like Black Metal?

Dan Louise: There's a couple really good black metal bands that I support, but when I see some kids posing in the woods behind their mom's house for their two-chord demo with gay swords and switchblades painting their faces like Paul Stanley, it makes it hard to like black metal. It sounds great when it's done right, but when it's off, it's OFF like Rob Halford's pants at a gay bar.

One topic beside music: How did you feel on the cruesome day for the USA, the 11th September? I think that's the biggest catastrophe for years.

Dan Louise: Without getting too into this, yes, it was a terrible tragedy that so many people lost their lives. But there is a reason that this happened. America's government is the world leader when it comes to terrorist activities and suppression. The media here uses propaganda to keep the majority of people in the dark about United States foreign policies, and the media is owned by the same multi-national corporations that pull the strings in our Government. If the public knew what the fuck our government does around the world, they wouldn't be waving flags around and getting fat on fucking hot dogs. The leaders of this country would be removed from power. That's not going to happen anytime soon because there's too much money controlled by too few people here. Anyway, I would hope that something like that doesn't happen again in any country because things are already fucked up enough as it is.

Back to the Band: How can we imagine a Rehearsal-Day of CINERARY? Always concentrated Rehearsaling or sometimes more drinking, smoking and hanging around?

Dan Louise: Ha ha! Well, in our few practices, it is all business until we are done rehearsing, then we can get drunk and whatever else goes on. But we have only had a few practices, so we have no choice but to get on it. If we were practicing all the time, it would be a bit more relaxed I think but we haven't been able to do it. The vibe between everyone has been real good though, I mean that's why we all still want to do this. When that changes I'll let you know. Ha ha!

Is it possible to see CINERARY in Europe somewhere in the Future? As you possibly know, we have some fine Underground-Festivals here in Europe, FUCK THE COMMERCE in Germany and OBSCENE EXTREME in the Czech Republic. I think, CINERARY would bludgeon theese Stages brutal as Hell. How are the Chances for you to come to us hungry Europeans?

Dan Louise: We would LOVE to go there and play and party!!! We have to get our shit together here though, and it may take a while, but it is definitely a goal for us.

Are you satified with your Label "Deepsend Records"? Are they doing enough Promotion for you, sending you on good Tours and Stuff like that?

Dan Louise: Well, I thought we had struck a fair deal as far as we were concerned. Touring has been out of reach for a while as everyone has other things going on in their lives. I just wish Rituals Of Destruction would have been promoted more. I mean, I have yet to see a poster or sticker or flyer or anything like that.

Matti, could you tell me what Problem is there between californian DISGORGE and mexican DISGORGE? I also asked Antimo from the mexican Dudes for a Feature over 1 Year ago about a Statement about the US-DISGORGE and he just said "No Coment". It seems that he is not lucky about a Band which uses the same Name as his Act. Do you know something about that?

Matti Way: As far as I know, there is no problem between them. I really don't want to get into anything like that.

You don't like HYPOCRISY very much, I guess. You've got a Hidden Track on the "Rituals of Desecration", where you kid their Song "Inferior Devoties" and it ends up with some Laughs from you all. What about that joke?

Dan Louise: That hidden track isn't a burn on Hypocrisy. It was just fucking around after all the main tracks were recorded and we thought it came out pretty funny, especially the chorus part. But there was no intention of poking fun at anyone or any band.

Which Bands and Releases would you recommend to our Readers? And which Bands are your Favorites from Europe, especially Germany?

Dan Louise: Lately, I've been listening to Brodequin, Gorgasm, Decapitated, High on Fire, Disavowed, Severe Torture, Misery Index, Destroyer666, Immolation. I guess I could keep going, but fuck it. There's a lot of really good bands out there. I suggest you go support your local independent metal store and buy as much as you can.

What was the first Record or CD you ever bought?

Dan Louise: I bought "We Sold Our Soul For Rock And Roll', a "best-of" album from Black Sabbath in 1978 or so with money I saved for like a month. Sabbath still rules!!!

Which Song should be played on your Burial?

Dan Louise: "Electric Funeral", by Black Sabbath

Who's your All Time-Fave in Death Metal-Music?

Dan Louise: Gotta be Slayer, Napalm Death, Immolation, Suffocation, Morbid Angel.

With which Bands did you have your best Gigs and Tours til now?

Dan Louise: The last tour we did with DEEDS OF FLESH, and when we went to South America. That was sick as hell!!! Milwaukee metal fests were always fun too.

Is it true, that most Americans love today's Cult-Cartoons such as BEAVIE'S AND BUTTHEAD, THE SIMPSONS or SOUTH PARK? Here in Germany that Series have Lots of enthuseastic Fans. Do you also like theese Cartoons?

Dan Louise: I watch some of those shows. They are better than most of the programming here, so that isn't saying much for American TV. But those cartoons are pretty funny.

Okay, Bros, I think, I've molested you enough with my stupid Questions... I wish I soon can listen to a new high-powered Album of CINERARY and I'm looking forward to see you Guys live on German Stages. The famous last Words belong to you, if you have to say somethings to the Readers of the CARNAGE-Mag. Grind 'til Death!!!

Dan Louise: Cool! I hope to see everyone soon, and all you sick bastards come check out our website www.violatedrot.com/cinerary. Later!
