BRODEQUIN

With their 2nd Album "Festival Of Death" BRODEQUIN from Knoxville, TN, USA released one more highlight in todays extreme Death/Grind-Movement, so I certainly use the Chance to ask Guitarrist Mike Bailey about that hopeful Act. Well, Mike, can you first tell us the History of BRODEQUIN?

We formed in August of 1998. Released a 4 song demo in 98 and recorded our debut in 99 which was released in 2000 and 2001. Once by ourselves and once by Ablated Records. In 2001 we recorded and released the follow up full length Festival of Death on Unmatched Brutality Records which is my label.

Is BRODEQUIN a Family-Project like brasilian Godz KRISIUN?

Yes I think so. Jamie and I have always been in bands together.

Which Bands would you name as the prime Influences for BRODEQUIN?

That is hard to answer because everyone has different favorites but I would say Disgorge, Last Days of Humanity Dead Infection, Angel Corpse and a ton of others.

What's the Meaning of the Word BRODEQUIN? It's a french Torture Device, right?

The Brodequin was an instrument of torture designed to destroy the victims legs by driving wedges of wood or steel in-between the legs and boards tied tightly around them. In some cases the damage was so severe the marrow of the bones would flow freely from the wounds.

In the next few Years the world-wide Death Metal/Grindcore-Scene finally rised up again after that fuckin’ Black Metal-and Melodic Death-Boom. True, uncompromising Death Metal in the Vein of the old Godz has lucky Days now, nearly like in the Golden Years of Death in the early Nineties. What do you think about that „New Wave of Death“, I would call it? Is it a Blessing in your Opinion or do you think, just the old Trend-Shitters from the first big Death Metal-Boom now rejoined the Scene after the Black Metal now got boring for them?

Anything that gets popular you are always going to have your clones and I think that is happens all the time with everything. No one is exempt. It is usually pretty easy to tell the posers from the true bands. Of course that doesn't make it any less annoying.

What do you think about Multimedia Tracks? Can you imagine to put some Live-Shots of BRODEQUIN onto the following Release?

I would love to do that. The problem is just finding some good quality video of us to use. Either the sounds if good and the shots are bad or vise versa. Hopefully we can find something worthwhile soon.

You were planned to play on the FUCK THE COMMERCE-Open Air in May. Why did you cancel the Gig?

We cancelled because our drummer Chad was supposed to go on tour with his Metallica tribute band and didn't want to cancel the whole tour just to do one show. It wasn't a definate though so I told Norman about it and cancelled because I didn't want him to have to wait until the last minute. I hate that we had to cancel. Jamie was there as the vocalist of Disgorge who headlined the second night of the fest and he said it was amazing.

Your Brother Jamie is also involted in the Band CINERARY. What do you think about that pretty brutal grindin’ Act?

I think they are great. I hope they do a lot more but with all the members living in different states it seems hard.

The „Festival of Death“-Album is the 1st Release on Unmatched Brutality. Is this your own Label?

Yes this is my own label.

How often do you rehearse with the Band?

We used to rehearse 5 times a week but since everyone is doing other things we don't practice as much as we used to.

How was the general Feedback on your two Albums?

The feedback has been great from most people but the others are always complaining about the production which I agree aren't as good as they should be. The next release will have the best production of any Brodequin release for sure. If the production on the next CD isn't perfect I won't release it.

Do you see a Difference between Death Metal and Black Metal or do you consider both Styles simply as extreme Metal-Music?

I think that there is a lot of extreme black metal out there but it gets clouded by all the trendy crap.

How important are the Lyrics for BRODEQUIN? As important as the Music?

Oh yes they are just as important. I hate lame death metal lyrics and there are a lot of them out there. My brother is a big history buff and he takes the lyrics very seriously.

Have you got a Concept behind the Lyrics and who writes the most Lyrics?

The lyrics are all historically accurate accounts of torture and Jamie writes them all.

Do you have any Side-Project beside BRODEQUIN?

Jamie is in Disgorge and Cinerary. Chad is in Pustulated, Dislimb, The metallica tribute band and I am not in any other bands.

What are your favorite Albums for all Times?

Autopsy - Mental Funeral, Iron Maiden - Live After Death.

Which Releases (Old or new) would you recommend to every Fan of brutal Music?

Bile - The Shed, Prostitute Disfigurement - Embalmed Madness, Brodequin - Festival of Death, Retch - Reinsertion of Aborted Remnants, Alienation Mental - Ball Spouter.

Can you give me some Statements about the following Bands?

DISGORGE (USA/Mexico) - Love them both
KABAK - Didn't like them
CINERARY - Love them
SCREAMING AFTERBIRTH - Didn't like it
EXHUMED - Liked there old stuff
MORTICIAN - Classic
DERANGED - Liked the old stuff
SINISTER - Rule!

Okay, no more Questions from my Side. Good Luck with the Band and GRIND 'TIL DEATH!!! Do you have some last Words for the Readers?
