BORN OF FIRE

This interview was made in the autumn, but the members of Born of Fire haven't time to answer me. But now the answers are arrived. This band had released an 7" titled "Chosen By The Gods". This two songs were written in the vein of early ENTOMBED and DISMEMBER. It's no surprise, because one of the BORN OF FIRE members is Rickard Cabeza from DISMEMBER, who plays the bass. The answers was given by Rickard and Freddie.

Richard, before I would like to ask you about BORN OF FIRE please tell me about the years what you passed in DISMEMBER. When was DISMEMBER established? How many demotapes did you record? Tell me please about the early years of DISMEMBER!

Rickard: DISMEMBER was established in early 1988, recorded four demos in total, before signing a deal with Nuclear Blast.

How was the swedish underground scene, as DISMEMBER was established?

Rickard: Alot diffrent... much more bands, more shows (extream music). But I think the scene is getting back more like it was back then now.

With "Like An Everflowing Stream" you created an all time classic. How do you remember about the album? Which song do you like?

Rickard: It was the first album I recorded and I was very young at that time...we had a lot of fun back then, "Dimemberd" and "in death`s sleep" is two of my favorites.

This piece was followed by "Indicent And Obscene".

Rickard Correct.

In 1995 you made the record "Massive killing capacity". Were you still playing on this album?

Rickard: Yes

Dismember was compared to Entombed. In your opinion was an difference or resemblance between the bands? Do you like the "Left Hand Path" album?

Rickard: Of course, just listen to the albums. Yes "Left Hand Path" is a classic death metal album, important to the whole scene.

Why and when did you leave Dismember? Do you have connection with the members of Dismember?

Rickard: I left the band to move to Norway and to play with Satyricon. But i am back with Dismember since 2 years back.

Do you have actual information about Dismember or Unleashed? Do you know something about Grave?

Freddie: I used to be in Unleashed but do not have that good contact with them anymore, I know they played some festivals this summer. GRAVE played a show in Stockholm one week ago.
Rickard: Dismember is working on a new album. Unleashed I dont know, and Grave is still playing, But i dont know under which name.

When was Born of Fire established? Who does play in the band? What does it mean the name of the band? Did you choose your name on the strength of the Slayer song? Did you listen to the last Slayer albums? Do you like SLAYER?

Freddie I started the band together with Mr Dim about one and a half year ago. It’s me Freddie on leadguitar, Mr Dim on vocals and bass, Rickard on rythm guitar and Peter on drums.
I stole the name from a Slayer song. Slayer are one of my all time favorite band, I heard the new one and liked it alot, not as much as their old material but it’s still OK.

By Primitive Art Records was edited an 7”Ep “Chosen by the gods”. How did you come to this label? How far does you the label support? What’s your opinion about Primitive Art?

Freddie: They heard our demotape, liked it and asked if they could release it as an 7” and we said yes because we think primitive art is an cool underground label. They supported us by releasing the 7” but thats all we asked for.

What kind of bands are working by Primitive Art? Do you like the groups they are working by this label? I know only Nifelheim.

Freddie: Gehenna, Satanarchy etc, check their website out at: www.primitiveartrecords.com

When and where did you record the 7”Ep? Who wrote the music and the lyrics? Please tell me about the songs. What is it about the lyrics?

Freddie: We recorded the songs at dogpound audio with Nico Moosebeach (bassplayer of TERRA FIRMA) who have recorded: Entombed/terra firma/loudpipes/blackshine albums and more.
Me and MR Dim wrote all the music and lyrics. The lyrics deal abouth death and depression.

Did you give any concerts? How many gigs did you have? How successful were your concerts?

Freddie: B.O.F have not played any live shows yet, we were invited to play a festival in Greece last summer but didn't have the time to get there but we will go there and play this comming winter.
I guess we will play some shows in our hometown Stockholm as well.

On the early Dismember photos was an inverted cross in your neck. What does it symbolize for you? Are you atheist or heathen? What does it mean for you the idea of atheism?

Rickard: I belive in the Devil!!!

How do you value the contemporary swedish death metal scene? What is your opinion about Deranged, Defaced Creation or Inisision? What is your opinion about the last albums of Entombed? To which swedish bands would you draw our attention?

Freddie: I like the two new Entombed albums. Haunted is my fave band in Sweden though.

What's the cause, that from Sweden are many brutal death metal bands coming? Which music or groups do you listen to nowadays?

Freddie: Slayer, Haunted, Black sabbath, Sir lord baltimore, Old destruction/sodom and Kreator.

Death metal was an popular style in the beginning of the nineties. How do you see today? Maybe death metal returned on an underground level? Which direction is it going death metal nowadays?

Freddie: I don’t know but I know it will live forever.

What’s the substance of the death metal for you? What does it mean for you underground, to be underground? In your opinion which bands and albums are the most important in the death metal scene?

Freddie Death and thrash albums: DEATH ("Scream Bloody Gore", KREATOR ("Pleasure To Kill") SLAYER ("Reign In Blood").
